trag·e·dy – Definition: 1) very sad event: an event in life that evokes feelings of sorrow or grief.
How exactly does one recover from a tragedy? I suppose that it is different for everyone, for Valencia frontman Shane Henderson, solace was found in a guitar and piles of photographs; following the untimely passing of his girlfriend Dana Burrell. When the Flowers Bloom… is a honest and sincere look at heartache and loss, 13 tracks of sorrow, hope, and a great attempt at recovery. Henderson’s raw emotion pours out of each song, as the stripped down acoustic sound of the record possesses more intensity than any sonically charged rock album. In my opinion, if Shane’s experience could be summed up in one song, it would be “Trace Those Steps” – which is why I’ve named it the Standout track. I had sometime to meet with Shane this past summer, and he is a very genuine individual, why something so horrible could happen to such a nice person is unknown. Nevertheless, I’m sure through every chord, and each show Dana is smiling down on Shane, and is now more apart of his life than ever. When the Flowers Bloom…, is a heartfelt tribute, and a meaningful record that can comfort and offer hope.

Anberlin Update
Stephen Christian of Anberlin has posted an update from the studio, check it out below.
community friends.
well im going to be honest. this is my first surfacing since december 16th when we got off tour with motion city soundtrack. when you tour 10 months a year you get stuck in the monotony of the day you stop appreciating what you have and where your band is at in life. so for me i needed to take a step back, i needed to take a look at band life and fall in love with it & music all over again. so for me i took a “brian wilson” holiday. i’m not saying i went crazy, i just grew a beard and hid while obsessing on anberlin’s next record “sounds of pets”.
this is not an “oh whoa is me, my life is so hard” journal entry because its not! this life is only fit for a movie! this journal entry is more of a THIS NEXT RECORD WE HAVE BEEN WRITING IS GOING TO BE THE BEST OF OUR ENTIRE LIVES! kinda of post.in my silence i had the opportunity to escape to new orleans where i hid out at a bed and breakfast. the orleans music scene is beyond comprehension, i sat at the spotted cat one night (on frenchman) and listened to one (cab calloway sounding) band for over three hours, i was mesmerized by the talent and musical culture this town had produced. musicians of all sorts were playing with other musicians, it was like they had built one giant band with interchangeable pieces. (thanks kevin for hanging out!) it inspired not only anberlins next record it made me want to come back and play a show with my side project (anchor & braille) in tampa/st. pete just to get local musicians together!
while there i spent the majority of my time at a small cafe’ called kahve (on the corner of touro and royal) right outside the french quarter writing the next anberlin record. you have to see this place to believe it, if any of you know me and ever visit there you can see why it would feel so at home. its a 1700’s house thats dark yet inviting and with two pianos in the back only lit by lamp it made the perfect place to write.
the songs that came from the trip, inspired by new orleans, are like none other before; i can safely say that we have never been so prepared or excited for a record in the history of anberlin. usually when we walked in the studio previously we would have no more than 12 songs ready to record; as of right this second we are sitting on 19 songs with three more in the works; and on top of that we are working with THE neal avron who makes hits in his sleep and we are backed by universal republic who has afforded us such amazing opportunities.
christian has been such an impact on this band and on this upcoming record, any fan of acceptance will hear it, and i think he has been such a driving force for joey’s (unreal) writing on this record. deon has been really taking over online so i could catch my break and nathan is starting an art company (with more details coming soon!).
so much more to come.
thank you friends for letting us belong to you.

June Update
June has posted an update on the status of their future. Check out the message below.
Hey guys,
We wanted to share with you everything that has been going on in our lives as of late.
We’re very very sad to say that this is the first time the band is not going to be the priority in our lives since we were all youngsters in high school. There’s really no other way to explain it besides saying that we just all feel we need to change something. It was a feeling that was collectively brought up by all of us so there are definitely no harsh splits or arguments that were involved when this decision came to be.
Basically, it’s been our dream since we could all actually play songs on our instruments to be in a successful touring band. We’ve worked hard since we were sophomores in high school (a pretty bad garage band at best, ha) to build a very cool following in Chicago and then eventually sign to Victory Records and put out two CD’s in stores while touring with the absolute coolest bands across the country. All of these things were amazing goals that we achieved and will be things that we will never ever forget doing (plus, we have endless amounts of stories from the road). It really does make us sad when we start sitting and reminiscing about all of the incredible shows we’ve played, the people we’ve met, the parties and places we went to everywhere in the US…it was all just amazing. However, it also becomes a harsh reality when you really start having to look at your own life and really building to have a successful career.
Unfortunately, the music industry, as awesome as it is to be apart of, is a tough place to really set yourself up for a stable setting in the future. Everything is so fickle regarding how a band breaks out or not. You can be together for 2 months and then be on top of the world…or it could take you many years of touring your asses off and working hard before you start seeing a return…or you could work just as hard as the next band but have nothing ever happen for you. I think the key here is “working hard”. That’s why we’re not as upset over this as we thought we were going to be. We toured as much as we possibly could and poured everything we could into our songs. Sure, people can look at us and say “they quit too early” or “they could have done more”…but when we all feel a certain way, what point is there to try working as hard as we have when the passion is starting to fade? We’ve all been together for 6+ years and the amount of effort we put into this was 100%. The one thing we wanted to make sure is that nobody thought we just gave up like it was nothing. This was definitely one of the hardest conclusions we have ever had to come to and we’re all very upset things didn’t work out like we wanted them to.
So anyway, before I ramble on too much…we want to give a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us/bought our records/came to our shows/partied with us/let us stay at their place/talked to us/etc. over the whole time we’ve been a band. The time will come where we can list every single person we thank and why…but that’ll be in the near future. There’s too many people and too many stories to just try coming up with names within a day or two. We’ve met many amazing new friends that we will always keep in touch with…and no matter what…the entire experience was COMPLETELY WORTH IT.
I don’t want to say that we’re broken up…we still want to write music, trust me…but as far as touring and taking months off to do it, that’s what has to change. None of us will be able to completely block this out of our lives…and if we can…we will still be releasing music to the world.
We’ll miss all of you incredibly. Please, make sure to keep in touch. All of our screen names will still be on our Myspace page (shameless plug…www.myspace.com/june). If you’ve got a story of a funny event/party/anything that you’ve shared with us, tell us! We want to remember it all, haha.
As far as our music, we’re not going to force it toward anybody. If you feel like checking it out, go ahead and do so. If you don’t, who cares, come find us and hang out. We all enjoy having a good time, ha.
Finally, to all of our friends working in the industry (bands, label employees, managers, etc)..we wish you luck! It’s been a blast playing shows and working with you, we know how hard it is, and if you feel like your time is not over…keep working hard!
Look out for the last round of shows we will be playing for a while. They should be posted as soon as they are confirmed.
We Love You,
Sutor, Tim, AJ, Mark
