Set Your Goals – This Will Be The Death Of Us

August 12, 2009 By Max Specht 2 Comments

Artist: Set Your Goals
Album: This Will Be The Death Of Us
Label: Epitaph Records
Purchase: Amazon
Release Date: July 21rst, 2009

Overall: 8.0
Music: 8.5
Lyrics: 7.5
Production: 8.0

It seems to be that the band Set Your Goals aren’t at all intimidated by other bands in the “scene”. They have taken all the neon-clad, faux-screaming hipsters and blown them all away with just the opening guitar off their latest album This Will Be The Death Of Us. It seems as though they are out to prove that punk-rock is still very much alive in the hearts of listeners.

The album opens up with the title track “This Will Be The Death Of Us” that pounds along with racing guitars and drums, complimented by well-placed gang vocals that make the song an intense affair and a definite sign of what to expect from the rest of the album: Fast, intense and passionate.

Set Your Goals have the formula for making a strong punk record down pat. If it isn’t present in the anti-establishment jam “Look Closer”, that pulsates with furious guitar parts and strong lyrics. Or the anthemic vibe of “The Fallen…”, with great dueling vocals and delivery that makes the lyrics more powerful then paper could provide. Switching gears and next you thing you know the album provides the pop-punk faithfuls that are afraid of head-banging to much with songs like “Equals” and “Summer Jam”.

It’s obvious that Set Your Goals are demanding some attention with This Will Be The Death Of Us. The lyrics are becoming more powerful and anthemic while not being afraid of turning the volume all the way up to 11 (See: “Gaia Bleeds (Make Way For Man”). There are (and should be) a lot of people turning their heads to see the heavy tunes Set Your Goals are churning out on their way to the top. All the bands that are popular with techno beats right now should watch out for these hardcore saviors.

Set Your Goals Signs To Epitaph

March 24, 2009 By Ben Minsky 1 Comment

Set Your Goals has now officially signed with Epitaph Records.

Set Your Goal’s Highly Anticipated Sophomore Album Due Out in July

Epitaph Records is proud to announce the signing of Bay Area pop-punk crew Set Your Goals with plans to release their sophomore album on July 21st. The band recently wrapped up recording with Mike Green (Paramore, The Matches) and will be hitting the road with labelmates New Found Glory on a cross-country tour.

“Of all our options, Epitaph was our first pick and we’re very excited about having a great team of people behind us who will give this record the push we know it deserves,” said singer Matt Wilson. “We’ve put a lot of time into this and it’s reassuring to see that they believe in it as much as we do. The staff is very enthusiastic about working with our ideas and there is a dedication to our band here that we’ve never felt from any other label.”

Born out of the Bay Area punk scene, Set Your Goals released an EP in 2006 and their critically acclaimed, fan favorite full length, Mutiny!, later the same year. Immediately grabbing the attention of their fellow bands and fans, the group would go on to tour with the likes of Alexisonfire, Anti Flag and Saves The Day over the next few years. In 2007 the band was featured on the Punk Goes Acoustic 2 compilation and in 2008 they recorded Lil Jon’s “Put Yo Hood Up” for the Punk Goes Crunk compilation.

With fan anticipation for the group’s sophomore full length at an all time high, Set Your Goals have joined forces with punk’s most established label, and have their sights set on making their best album yet.

Set Your Goals Update

March 20, 2009 By Ben Minsky Leave a Comment

Set Your Goals’ new album is complete. Check out the update below.

…well, on our end of things at least. We’re still waiting on a couple guest spots to be finished and a few finishing touches before we send it off to be mixed and mastered but that will be done by the end of next week. It was a long (6 weeks) and difficult journey but we made it. It’s been 3 years since we recorded our last full length and this record is without a doubt ten times the record “Mutiny!” was for a variety of reasons. It’s faster, less goofy, more complex both musically and lyrically, plus we’ve all gotten way better at our instruments and we had a lot more time in the studio to work on things until we were happy with them. The bar has been raised. The label will be announcing the signing at the end of the week and the (tentative) street date is 7/21/09.
