All Time Low – So Wrong, It’s Right

November 10, 2007 By Nick Singleton 2 Comments

All Time Low

Artist: All Time Low
Album: So Wrong, It’s Right
Label: Hopeless Records
Purchase: Smart Punk
Release Date: September 25, 2007

Overall: 7.5
Music: 7.0
Lyrics: 7.5
Production: 8.5

Over the past few years, a handful of justifiable pop/rock bands have emerged from the scene with smoothed out melodies and rehashed musical crescendos. Although the Maryland quartet All Time Low may fall under this class, they simply do it better. So Wrong, It’s Right, the group’s highly-anticipated follow up to their Put Up Or Shup Up EP, is a collection of twelve infectious, foot-tapping anthems. Regardless of the fact that no one will confuse this album as something innovative, All Time Low does cash in on a scene that has continued to modernize pop music.

The album begins with a fast paced track entitled “This Is How We Do” which easily sets the pace for their Hopeless Records debut. “Let It Roll”, a potential future single, follows with contagious melodies and amounts to a luster of teen attitude, which also plays favorite to the group’s single “Six Feet Under The Stars”. “Six Feet” can be acclaimed as one of the strongest put-together songs on the album; the lyrics are well written and the chorus is strongly versed by frontman Alex Gaskarth. Other standout tracks on the album include: “Holly (Would You Turn Me On?)”, “Dear Maria, Count Me In”, and “Stay Awake (Dreams Only Last For A Night)”.

All in all, So Wrong, It’s Right is a vigorous batch of pop/rock songs produced by the household name Matt Squire (also accredited, Paul Leavitt). I’m sure that this album will denote some criticism for its generic sound, and it does lose some value because of this, but this is the album All Time Low was content in making. I think it’s safe to say, however, that these lovable goofballs have a bright future ahead of themselves, and I’m buying in.

Track Listing:
1. This Is How We Do
2. Let It Roll
3. Six Feet Under The Stars
4. Holly (Would You Turn Me On?)
5. The Beach
6. Dear Maria, Count Me In
7. Shameless
8. Remembering Sunday
9. Vegas
10. Stay Awake (Dreams Only Last For A Night)
11. Come One, Come All
12. Poppin’ Champagne

All Time Low Frontman Responds To Fan’s Suspension Over Band Photo

September 20, 2007 By Bryce Jacobson 6 Comments

Alex Gaskarth, frontman for All Time Low has responded to a recent report that a fan in the band’s home state of Maryland was given a three day suspension from her middle school for displaying this photo on her  binder.

“Personally, I’m a little upset that anyone would find that picture to be ‘offensive.’ We tried our very hardest to look as sexy as possible and I think that maybe the administrative figures responsible for suspending the student were just jealous of our dashing, young physiques. I don’t see any harm in carrying that particular picture around in a school environment. In fact, I’ve been speculating that studies may prove that the picture actually stimulates brain activity, and promotes greater levels of success in the classroom. But that’s just one theory…”

All Time Low’s So Wrong It’s Right will be released Tuesday, September 25 on Hopeless Records. Catch All Time Low on tour with Boys Like Girls starting September 29th.

Amber Pacific – Truth In Sincerity

May 22, 2007 By Andrea Hubbell 1 Comment

Amber Pacific

Artist: Amber Pacific
Album: Truth In Sincerity
Label: Hopeless Records
Purchase: Smart Punk
Release Date: May 22nd, 2007

Overall: 8.5
Music: 8.0
Lyrics: 9.0
Production: 9.5

For those of you anticipating Amber Pacific’s new album “Truth in Sincerity” to be a complete evolution from their first full-length album, “The Possibility in the Promise”, you will be disappointed. However, for those of you that are fans of Amber Pacific’s original style, you will be thrilled with their latest album. Amber Pacific, consisting of Matt Young, Greg Strong, “Dango”, and Will Nutter, can be described as one of those bands that is distinguished in great part by the sound of their vocalist’s voice. Matt Young has a deep, sorrowful voice that can easily convey the emotions that their music typically expresses: love, heartbreak, and anguish. The quality and sound of his vocals hasn’t changed within the new album. The band’s generally romance-related song messages are also disclosed through their creative, sentimental lyrics; the topics their music touches on have also not changed very much throughout this album.

Nor has the general sound of their music changed too much. It is heavily guitar-incorporated and has a hopeful sound that appeals to many. The main change that Amber Pacific has made in their music within the new album is the speed of their songs. Many songs in the new album have a quicker pace. I personally enjoyed the sound of the new album, but was somewhat disappointed to not see many changes in their music, although I am a fan of “The Possibility and the Promise”. Being a fan of their previous full-length album, I was excited to see that the CD’s bonus tracks were, in fact, acoustic versions of two songs from “The Possibility and the Promise”-“Always You (Good Times)” and “For What It’s Worth”. Throughout these numbers, Matt Young’s voice sounds very raw and natural-suggesting that he is a naturally talented vocalist.

So, all in all, I recommend Amber Pacific’s latest album to fans that wouldn’t mind and might in fact enjoy hearing something very similar to their last album. For those of you that haven’t had the pleasure of listening to Amber Pacific prior to now, I also recommend the albums to those of you interested in a rock band with a somewhat mellow sound.

Track List
1. Rule #76
2. Summer (In B)
3. Temporary
4. Youre Only Young Once
5. Living Proof
6. Follow Your Dreams
7. Take Me From This
8. Fall Back Into My Life
9. We Think Were Hardcore, Cause, Well, We Are
10. Runaway (Featuring Mike Herrera Of Mxpx)
11. Watching Over Me
12. Dear ____, This Has Always Been About Standing Up For Yourself

The Human Abstract – Nocturne

November 21, 2006 By Manuel Enrique Garcia 5 Comments

The Human Abstract

Artist: The Human Abstract
Album: Nocturne
Label: Hopeless Records
Purchase:Ԛ SmartPunk
Release Date: August 22, 2006

Overall: 9.0
Music: 10
Lyrics: 8.5
Production: 9.5

Bands are always trying to perfect their ability to mimicry the sounds and essence of other bands, that potentially have more success in the music industry. Spend an entire day listening to bands and youâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢ll begin to notice that half of them are simply conjoined twins at the chest. One heartbeat, one soul, one existence. They are attached, identical, and they share one thing in common: they want to find the quickest way into the mainstream without having one ounce of creativeness flowing through their carbon copied veins. There comes a time when a band emerges from the womb that isnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t conjoined to anyone else; one band with enough creative masterpiece to fuel the country of India.

The Human Abstract hails from California and they are a sculptorâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s glorious creation in the midst of a stream of artificial musicianship. With their latest release â┚¬Ã…”Nocturneâ┚¬?, The Human Abstract showcases exactly what they are capable of and what their fans can expect from them. This band consists of a wide range of genres and clearly create music without any limitations. Every song on this record consists of elements of progressive rock, pop, European metal, acoustic, and everything else imaginable. The heavy segments are brutal and the melodic choruses are catchy. Each song transforms you into a soldier going into a medieval battle against a nation filled with angst. Each song is filled with enough drive and intensity to motivate you, fuel you, and bring yourself to a reflection of the self. The songs serve as individuals. Each one emitting an aura with their own essence and theme, giving the listener a chance to feel a wide range of emotions while listening to â┚¬Ã…”Nocturneâ┚¬? as a whole.

The instruments are preformed with excellence, as if the band members were born with their given instrument strapped to their chest in conception. The guitars will leave you in a state of amazement with the overall sounds feeling like an illusion, something surreal. The drums are pounding loudly and echoing into each ear, leaving you with a sense of pride. Some of the most admiring aspects of this record are the acoustic guitar and classical interlude, which happens to give you a chance to lay back, relax, and reflect.

The Human Abstract have created an epic record that will leave you satisfied with the fact that finally, a band makes a record that flows against the current. During the coarse of 50 minutes, the record will strap you down with a blindfold across your eyes, carry you over the shoulder of a seven foot tall warrior, and place you on top of the highest cliff. From there, the blindfold will be removed and as you look down, you will see one of the most epic battles emerging from every angle. As the savages tear themselves apart, you hear a distinct sound echoing in the air. With each swing of the sword, a guitar riff. With each pull of the arrow, the pounding of the drums. With each body collapsing, the intensity of the vocals relapsing. As the glorious revolution continues throughout nightfall, you can only hear one sound playing in the sky: The Human Abstractâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s â┚¬Ã…”Nocturneâ┚¬?.

Track Listing:
1. Harbinger
2. Self Portraits Of The Instincts
3. Nocturne
4. Crossing The Rubicon
5. Sotto Voce
6. Mea Culpa
7. Channel Detritus
8. Movement From Discord
9. Polaris
10. Echelons To Molotovs

Kaddisfly – The Four Seasons EP

October 24, 2006 By Tyler Hayes 1 Comment

Kaddisfly The Four Seasons EP

Artist: Kaddisfly
Album: The Four Seasons EP
Label: Hopeless Records
Purchase: Download Punk
Release Date: October 24th, 2006

Overall: 7.9
Music: 9.0
Lyrics: 6.9
Production: 7.9

All to often we discriminate based on the bandâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s name even though that really doesnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t have much, if anything to do with the music itself. Seemingly stupid I know but it happens. Kaddisfly fell into that category for me, a band that Iâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢d heard in passing but never had enough interest based on their name to check out. Though Iâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢m sorry I hadnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t checked them out sooner.

Kaddisfly is a band that reminded me right of the bat of a more pop, more mainstream friendly version of Brazil (fearless records). Thatâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s not to say one band is better or worse, merely comparing the similarities. Intricate guitar parts, soaring vocals and typically quick spoken (sung) lyrics make up the EP â┚¬Ã…”The Four Seasonsâ┚¬?. These songs are tremendously catchy, and pull you in very quickly. For example the song â┚¬Ã…”Campfireâ┚¬? starts with the lyrics â┚¬Ã…”welcome to your life, you better watch your stepsâ┚¬Ã‚¦Ãƒ¢Ã¢”š¬? and even after those few words itâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s hooked you.

This EP is a preview of what to expect from Kaddisflyâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s upcoming album in which every song will be representing a different month (12 songs), and the songs will be grouped in threes, with each group representing a different season (4 seasons). Itâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s a really cool concept although I just donâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t know how well it will turn out. Each of the songs on the EP was from a different â┚¬Ã…”seasonâ┚¬?, but I couldnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t tell and thus leads me to think that the concept part of the record will be lost on people, however it doesnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t take away from the music.

Track listing
1. Games (Unreleased B-Side)
2. Campfire
3. Empire
4. Silk Road
5. Mercury
