Escape the Fate Interview

July 3, 2009 By Kristen Cavanaugh

etf2

As promised, I snagged some time to talk with Escape the Fate‘s drummer, Robert Ortiz while they were in Pomona for the opening day of Warped Tour 2009. This guy oozes rock and roll and everything that comes with it. Check out the (highly censored) interview.

A lot of bands play at the same time during Warped. Why should people come see Escape the Fate ?
Cause we’re f**king insane, that’s why. We’re probably the best band. Period.

Definitely. I’ve been coming to Warped for years now and I can honestly say you’re one of the best bands I’ve seen.
I had a lot of fun today.

Speaking of fun, what’s the craziest thing you’ve seen at Warped?
I don’t know, man, f**king, I don’t know. There’s always like, kids in wheelchairs f**king crowd surfing, people getting their f**king heads split open, people dying”¦I don’t know, I’ve seen some crazy shit.

If someone were to write a book about Escape the Fate, what would the title be?
F**k man, I don’t know, it’d be real f**king long though. And it’d be about tragedy, hope and f**kin'”¦it’d just be f**king crazy. It’d be a comedy most of the time, though. I dunno, I got nothing. It’d be sick though.

What is the biggest misconception about you guys?
I don’t think there is one. It’s all fu**kin’ real. Everything. All true. The problem is, it’s not that there’s not misconceptions, you know, it’s just that people choose to emphasize certain aspects of us. Even though that’s how we really are, it’s not the only thing we are, know what I mean? There’s a deeper side to us that a lot of people won’t ever see.

If this were Woodstock, what band would Escape the Fate be?
F**kin’ Jimi Hendrix.

You guys are playing the Hurley stage this year. Do you think it’s because it’s inflatable and there’s nothing Craig can climb up and jump off of?
Um, probably, dude, probably. Gotta hold us back a little bit, keep us a little tame to calm down the lawsuits.

Anything else you wanna add?
F**king come watch us at Warped Tour!

Check out some of the pictures I got during Escape the Fate’s set in Ventura! (They’re camera phone pictures so I apologize for the quality.)

Warped 2009 – Get to Know the Band: Escape the Fate

June 23, 2009 By Kristen Cavanaugh

etf

Since I first heard Escape the Fate’s debut EP in 2006, I’ve been a fan. Initially, I can attribute this to the fact that I’m a huge Motley Crue junkie. Now, I’m not saying that Escape the Fate is the reincarnation of the Crue, but let’s face it, among all the pop-punk and straight-edge bands on the scene, Escape the Fate is, at the very least, the Motley Crue of Warped Tour. Think about it. Both of the original lead singers have done jail time. Both bands have parted ways with their lead singer (at least temporarily). Both bands have a shy, quiet, soft-spoken, but shredding guitarist. Sure, these are trivial comparisons, but an article published in Kerrang! really shows similar lifestyles. I don’t know how much truth there is to this article, but for the sake of rock n’ roll, I’m going to go with it. I was born a decade too late for the domination of Motley Crue so I take what I can get. And I’m taking Escape the Fate.

Escape the Fate formed in Las Vegas back in 2004 and released their debut EP There’s No Sympathy for the Dead in May of 2006. Four months later, their first full-length album, Dying is Your Latest Fashion was released. Dying is Your Latest Fashion was the only full-length album released by Escape the Fate with their then lead singer, Ronnie Radke. In 2008, Radke was replaced by former Blessthefall vocalist, Craig Mabbitt and the band released their second album, This War is Ours in October of the same year.

I’m not going to get into the politics of why Ronnie Radke is no longer in the band or which singer is better. Bottom line is, if you like Ronnie, keep listening to Dying is Your Latest Fashion and check out his new band, Falling in Reverse (formerly From Behind These Walls). If you like Craig, listen to This War Is Ours or some old school Blessthefall. And hey, you could even check out some older tracks by Craig’s side project, The Word Alive (now fronted by former Greeley Estates member, Telle Smith). It’s not that hard, guys. You don’t have to turn this into an epic Team Ronnie vs. Team Craig situation like Twilight. (Team Edward, by the way…)

After completing a series of sold out headlining shows, these guys are going to be on Warped Tour all summer. YOU NEED TO CHECK THEM OUT. In my opinion, a lot of bands on Warped Tour are very “edited.” For example, maybe the band can kind of sing and play their instruments, but with the help of studio technology, they can sound amazing ““ until you see them live and just pray they’ll hit at least one note in their set. Escape the Fate is as far from an “edited” band as they get. These guys know what they’re doing and I’m pretty sure Craig Mabbitt is one of the best live performers on the scene today. These boys will put on one of the most explosive live shows you’ll see on Warped Tour this summer”¦possibly ever. Don’t miss them.

I’ll try and score some time with these guys out on Warped Tour, so keep your fingers crossed for an interview soon! (Update: You can read my interview with drummer, Robert Ortiz here.)

Until then, check out their newest video “10 Miles Wide” which features Josh Todd from Buckcherry. It’s over on their Myspace.

Still want more of these guys?

Escape The Fate Recording New Album

May 6, 2008 By Bryce Jacobson Leave a Comment

Escape The Fate are recording their next album with their new singer Mabbit. Check out the official press release below.

With an uncanny ability to always land on their feet, notorious Vegas rock group Escape the Fate have begun writing and recording with a spectacular new singer and a superstar producer.  With John Feldmann (the Used, Story of the Year) lending his talents as both producer and songwriter, and with the addition of singer Craig Mabbit, formerly of Bless the Fall, Escape the Fate are on track to make an even more amazing record than their stellar 2006 debut.

Following the departure of singer Ronnie Radke in early 2008, the band performed a handful of shows with Mabbit, and the personal and creative connection was immediate.  A fan of both ETF and Mabbit, Feldmann was the natural choice to produce, and in April, Escape the Fate began recording the follow-up to 2006’s Dying Is Your Latest Fashion, which featured the massive hit song “Situations.”  “People are going to be blown away and definitely surprised when they hear Craig’s vocals mixed with Escape’s diverse sound,” explains bassist Max Green.  “This is the next generation of rock.”  The yet-untitled record is tentatively scheduled for a fall release.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to continue making music with a group of amazing people,” says Mabbit.  “I’m loving what’s coming out of us in the studio right now and things couldn’t be going better.  Escape the Fate is taking over the world, so buckle your seatbelts “˜cause we’re here to stay.”

After Radke’s dramatic departure, wild speculation spread across the internet regarding the future of Escape the Fate and direction the band would take if they were to continue on.  However, fans can breathe a sigh of relief:  the turmoil has left the band even more determined and fired up.  “We’ve been through a lot of shit this last year, and we took all that anger, frustration and sadness and molded it into an album with huge rock choruses, in your face riffs and melodies, and drums that will give your parents a heart attack,” explains Green.  “This new album isn’t going to be a hardcore metal album and it’s not going to be a soft melodic album, we are who we are, we are Escape the Fate.”
