Article #16 –The Impulse CD Buy

April 7, 2007 By Tyler Hayes 3 Comments

Everyone has impulsively bought something at one time or another whether it be an electronic toy or clothes or music or food so I know this topic will met with, if nothing else, understanding. Music is my weak spot when it comes to spending money because being able to find anything you want on itunes or Emusic and buy any cd at 3 am, and then have it right then is dangerous for a music lover trying to save money.

Online music is definitely the biggest temptation for impulsively buying music but Iâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢m focusing more on randomly buying a physical cd. Although I donâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t do it very often I do love every once in a while buying a cd that I havenâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t heard before. Almost always there is a cd on sale or for a good price which Iâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢ve heard people talk about but havenâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t gotten to check out or sometimes the artwork really sticks out or a combination of both.

A month or two ago I was in an American Eagle (because my wife went in I swearâ┚¬Ã‚¦) and Dashboardâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s newest music video was playing so I was like this is cool Iâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢ll sit in a chair and just watch while I wait. The next band that came on was Silversun Pickups. I had never really heard of the band but the video for â┚¬Ã…”Lazy Eyeâ┚¬? is a very good video, it matches the feeling of the song very well. I think if I had only heard the song I wouldnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t have been as intrigued with it. But true to fate I ended up in a store later that day with Silversun Pickups cd only being 7.99 thus weeks later I have not listened to the cd again.

Last week I was feeling lucky and decided I was in the mood to pick up a cd randomly again, and again I missed the mark. I had heard someone mention how they liked the band â┚¬Ã…”The Good, The Bad, The Queenâ┚¬? and so I picked it up hoping to stumble on my cd of the year, needless to say the music is weak and not my style. This cd I have listened to more than once though and it has a chance to grow on me.

The thing I love about buying cdâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s without having heard them I think is because I listen to so much music early before itâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s ever been released for reviewing, that Iâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢ve heard (and gotten sick of) so many records. I love having something that I havenâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t heard blow me away with how good it is, and usually being able to listen to it more than 3 days (see Audio A.D.D. Article). Is there anyone that does this too? What, if any, are some cdâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s that youâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢ve recently bought that hadnâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢t heard but were amazing, or terrible?

Fall Out Boy Delay Start of Honda Civic Tour

April 6, 2007 By Bryce Jacobson 1 Comment

Fall Out Boy has announced that due to personal issues beyond the bandâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s control, the first few weeks of The Honda Civic Tour have been delayed. These shows will be rescheduled to the end of the tour.

Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz says, “Just wanted to give everyone a heads up, we are planning on this being the biggest and best Fall Out Boy show that we could possibly have. Unfortunately, because of some personal issues we had to delay the tour a few weeks. We want to put on the best possible show we can and know that this extra couple of weeks will give us the time to put ourselves in the right place to put on the best show we can. The shows from the earlier part of the tour will be rescheduled to the end but all tickets will be honored for all moved shows. Again we apologize. Our fans really mean the world to us and I promise the wait will be well worth it.”

The only show that could not be rescheduled due to routing conflicts is the Sacramento show. Ticket holders for the Sacramento show can refund their tickets and can also re-buy tickets for the Concord date at point of purchase. Tickets may also be exchanged at Concord box office night of show for comparable price level, subject to availability. Refunds for all rescheduled shows will be given at point of purchase.

Weatherbox – American Art

April 6, 2007 By David Gagnon Leave a Comment

Artist: Weatherbox
Album: American Art
Label: Doghouse Records
Purchase: SmartPunk
Release Date: May 9th, 2007

Overall: 9.5
Music: 9.5
Lyrics: 9.0
Production: 9.0

Look, if you missed out on Weatherbox’s recently released EP The Clearing then you need to get your music priorities straight. It was, simply put, awesome! However, if you’ve been living under a rock and missed out on it, don’t lose too much sleep as three of the five tracks, from the EP, have made their way onto their debut full length due out this spring.

Ok, now that I’ve snapped a batch on those who slept on The Clearing, I can address those individuals, like myself, that have listened to the EP fifty times and are getting a little tired of the five tracks. Unfortunately I wish that the three tracks hadn’t made their way onto the full length, but that’s marketting; and to be completely honest, they are probably the three tracks I would have picked to carry over to American Art. Let’s just be thankful that the entire EP didn’t find it’s way to the full length.

So where do I begin; Ԛ the CD itself is a work of art. Lyrics are on point, guitars, drumming and vocals are excellent, if there was anything to be let down by, it would have to be the production level. Now, maybe it’s because my copy was an “advance” release and things could easily change from now to release date; but the production doesn’t take anything away from the stellar listening experience. Let it be known, my favorite track Snakes, Our Ground, which by the way can be streamed from their Myspace and Purevolume website, mixes great hooks and melodies that don’t disappoint… it has great lyrics about grass, wind, roots,
earth, fire, water, death, and going insane; without giving it outright away, it fills me with visuals of my
favorite Wednesday night show.

**Hint: Island Life for the TiVo generation.

American Art should be on everyone’s wish list, keep your eyes peeled in early May for it; You won’t be disappointed.

Kaddidfly – Set Sail the Prarie

April 5, 2007 By David Gagnon Leave a Comment

kaddisfly

Artist: Kaddisfly
Album: Set Sail the Prarie
Label: Hopeless Records
Purchase: Hopeless
Release Date: March 6th, 2007

Overall: 6.5
Music: 6.5
Lyrics: 6.5
Production: 7.0

Rarely does being extremely diverse, mixed with plenty of tallent, make a CD unenjoyable. However, in the case of the newest release from Kaddisfly, I found they’ve missed the mark on making, what some would call, refreshing and vibrant listening experience. After countless listens, I find myself unable to clearly state where this album even sits in my current collection. Now, don’t let me scare you away from Set Sail the Prarie, because there are many good things about it, but personally, I was scratching my head listening to this album rather then sitting back and enjoying it.

I shouldn’t be too judgemental, as this CD does have it’s good points, but it just so happens that they are few and far between. Such as an incredible reference to some ‘OhmahaStyley” that doesn’t disapoint. I don’t know what else to say about this one, I see the potencial but I find that they just don’t fully achieve it.

If your looking for something unique to perk up your music library this just might fill the void. Check out thier purevolume site to stream some tracks and make up your own mind.
