Hidden in Plain View – Resolution

August 6, 2007 By Adam Weidman Leave a Comment

Hidden in Plain View

Artist: Hidden in Plain View
Album: Resolution
Label: Drive-Thru Records
Purchase: Smart Punk
Release Date: July 24th, 2007

Overall: 7.5
Music: 8.0
Lyrics: 7.0
Production: 7.5

Earlier this year when the news of Hidden in Plain View’s breakup hit the wire, fans were left shocked and completely devastated. However many found solace in the fact that the group’s final effort, Resolution would get to see the light of day. As Drive-Thru Records still planned to release the posthumous record later in the year. Quickly message boards lit up with both sorrow and anticipation. Everyone shared fond memories of the beloved New Jersey group and pondered what the future would hold for the various projects that would stem from Hidden in Plain View’s demise. Despite the mourning all were anxious to hear what would come of the final recording session. What would the band leave us to remember them by?

We begin with “Bendy” a true opener that packs a real punch, with raw emotion and soaring melodies. I don’t think the album could be led off any better and the track itself will certainly go down as one of my favorites. “I Don’t Wanna Hear It” can only be described as a bouncy number that will without a doubt resonate in fans hearts for a longtime to come. We venture into slightly darker and heavier terrain with the songs “Heavy Breathing” and “Walk Harbor City” where the guitar work proves exceptional. I feel the standout track on Resolution is “Circles,” which is a perfect example of Hidden in Plain View’s finesse for bridging both heavy and melodic sounds to create a killer song. The hard-driving sounds of “Our Time” leave me wondering what could have been… if the group hadn’t called it a day. The ladder of the record is tied together nicely with a short instrumental “Interlude.”

Where “The Lake House” shows no signs of the professional or creative differences that were cited for the separation. The album concludes with “Hear Me Out” and as the ambient almost haunting echoes chant and ringout, the final chapter of Hidden in Plain View is written. While their existence was relatively short, the band has left quite a rich legacy behind. Hidden in Plain View and the music they made will always be remembered, thus giving their subsequent projects some very solid ground to stand on. So, what would the band leave us to remember them by? The answer is Resolution, and it is truly a great note for them to go out on.

Track List
1. Bendy
2. I Don’t Wanna Hear It
3. Like an Ocean
4. Heavy Breathing
5. Walk Harbor City
6. Circles
7. Our Time
8. Off My Shoulders
9. Interlude
10. Something Needs to Change
11. The Lake House
12. Hear Me Out

My Warped Tour Experience – July 31st

August 2, 2007 By Adam Weidman Leave a Comment

With my sunburn finally starting to show signs of subsiding I sit and reflect on my Warped Tour experience. Now I must admit I’m not big on festivals and haven’t been to Warped in many years. To be honest I wasn’t even planning on going until a couple days before, but I’m truly glad that I gave in and went.

The Starting Line kicked things off, and even though it was the release day for their new record they kept their set full of older selections. The backdrop for the Milwaukee stop of Warped was Lake Michigan, but unfortunately with the scorching temperatures it really wasn’t cooler by the lake… Amber Pacific played a great set and it was my first chance to hear some of the new material live. I then took some time to wander around and take it all in, look through the various tents and ponder why was there a Mexican wrestling match going on… New Found Glory hit the stage and really got the crowd going. They gave a preview of their upcoming cover album (From the Screen to Your Stereo Pt. 2) as they preformed “Kiss Me” originally by the group Sixpence None the Richer. I really had expected the attendance to be much larger, nevertheless the atmosphere was vibrant and fun. Very solid and energetic performances were given by Valencia and Mayday Parade, both groups will no doubt be staples of Warped for years to come.

As the mid afternoon sun beat down it was time for Alkaline Trio, truly the band I wanted to see more than anyone else. Unfortunately, I have to admit I was overall disappointed by them. Their live performances have blown me away in the past but I just wasn’t feeling it. They played a brand new song titled “In Vein” which will most likely appear on their Epic Records debut in ’08. The song itself didn’t “wow” me, but I know that they’ll pull it together and create a great record next year. My favorite performance of the day was easily Straylight Run. Even though their sound doesn’t fit with most Warped Tour acts, they held their own and stole the show (in my book). The entire set was meticulously paced and amazing to watch as each song was just perfect.

All Time Low, Underoath and Paramore seemed to be the bands that drew the biggest crowds, and for good reason. As I was waiting to leave, the man himself Kevin Lyman rode by on his bike. He was nice enough to stop and talk with my friends and I, he asked our names and thanked us for coming to the show. He is truly a down-to-earth and very genuine person, before riding off Kevin told us how to get to the famous Warped Tour BBQ. So thats where we headed, in between rows of tour buses there were tents and tables set up. With band and crew members just hanging out, winding down the day. As my friends roamed aisle after aisle of buses searching endlessly for Hayley of Paramore, I was perfectly content next to the keg drinking beer that was provided by The Starting Line. As the buses began to leave we made our exit as well, it was a great time and I for sure plan on going next year.
