Take Action Tour 2007 – Hollywood, CA

March 5, 2007 By Michael Schneider Leave a Comment

Take Action Tour

Take Action Tour 2007 Featuring
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Emery, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, A Static Lullaby and Kaddisfly
Feb 25 @ House Of Blues – Hollywood, CA

Let me start by apologizing to Kaddisfly. I was unable to make it in time, largely in part to the stellar (sarcasm), consistently overpriced parking at HOB. Besides this, there aren’t many things to complain about when it comes to HOB venues. Seemingly always well staffed, and under control, House of Blues concerts always have the big show feel with the smaller venue intimacy.

Starting off with recently reformed A Static Lullaby, the Take Action Tour was very much the ‘scream cause it’s trendy’ lineup I expected this year. ASL is nothing special, and definitely one of the least impressive live acts I’ve seen in a while. I think the main source of my distain is their lack of energy. Yes, they move around on the stage a fair amount, but when you put them up against the other bands on this tour, they’re not worth your time.

Scary Kids Scaring Kids definitely accomplished their band name. With their keyboardist removing his shirt and practically dry-humping his keyboard to death, I think any of the audience not familiar with the band were turned off. However, as far as performance goes, they were actually quite impressive. I found their music to be well organized and vocally it was executed with precision. I’m not sure if I’d make an extensive effort to see them again, but as an opener, they were just what the show needed to really get off the ground.
Being from Seattle, it’s great to see local favorites succeed on a bigger level. While Emery originally hailed from South Carolina, I was fortunate enough to be in attendance at many of the band’s first shows. Today, Emery is easily one of the best live bands in music. Playing now as a five-piece due to the departure of their bassist last fall, they haven’t lost a bit of their live show. In-your-face screams blended with melodies that knock you off your feet, unfortunately their set was cut shorter than we all expected, and we only got to hear about six songs.

With the shorter set, came a presentation of a tour plaque to the headlining act, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus by members of Hopeless Records, and tour beneficiaries Youth America Hotline (1.877.Youthline). This good gesture was followed by an incredible set from one of the newer artists in this vein. The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus were picked up by Virgin Records and their release “Don’t You Fake It” has already been certified gold. Playing almost the whole record, the band blended great musicianship and pure intensity and has again impressed me as a live act.

As long I can see, the Take Action! Tour will continue to be a staple to the music community. Blending the recent trend to be socially-mindful and active, with some incredible bands, you automatically have a recipe for success. No matter who is playing on this tour, you can always expect to get your money’s worth. If you don’t, why do you care? A portion of the proceeds go to suicide prevention. Take some time, and TAKE ACTION. For more information, head to takeactiontour.com.

Ernie Halter CD Release Show

February 28, 2007 By Michael Schneider Leave a Comment

Ernie Halter

Ernie Halter
CD Release Show – February 12th, 2006
Knitting Factory – Los Angeles, CA

Let me start by expressing my excitement when I figured out where exactly the Knitting Factory is. Right in the heart of Hollywood, and being from out of state, I had probably the most fun I’ve ever had before a concert exploring the area. Beyond that, the intimate setting the venue provided was perfect for the crowd, a diverse group as far as age.
Ernier Halter has come quite a ways since beginning to perform on a consistent basis. He’s played with John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Tony Lucca, Tyrone Wells and many other famous names, but he still has the work ethic to play small coffee houses and college campus shows as much as he possibly can. When I was invited to check out his CD Release show, I made every effort to make it happen.
Ernie’s crowd neared or met the capacity of the venue, and consisted of many popular LA area performers and industry reps. The average size stage was consumed with an incredible six piece band to accompany, and the group pushed their way into the set.
Halter came out and performed flawlessly about 12 songs, including hits from older releases, and new uptempo groove tracks from the new release, Congress Hotel. His band never missed a beat and his voice never missed a note. Upon the introduction to ‘Whisper’, Ernie thanked and recognize the co-writer of the song, who happened to be standing directly in front of me. Ever appreciative of Ernie’s talents, one can further infer that he truly is one of the most genuine people in music.
More impressive than nearly ever solo act I’ve ever seen, take one of the many chances nation-wide to see one of Ernie’s performances. His new album released on Rockridge Records is now available nation wide, and nearly every show is broadcast live on Ernie’s myspace. A big thank-you to Ernie and Krista Mettler at Skye Media!

Dustin Kensrue CD Release Show

Dustin Kensrue
Dustin Kensrue
CD RELEASE SHOW at the Silent Movie Theatre
Los Angeles, CA – January 27, 2007

Los Angeles is an amazing city. You never know what you will see, what you can do, or who you may run into. Upon entrance to the Silent Movie Theatre I turned to the merch table, and nearly bulldozed Bryce Avary (The Rocket Summer) and his wife. On top of some of the most prominent musicians, the industry’s most respected journalists, in attendance were the few lucky fans who were able to secure tickets to the show. Literally, a small movie theatre, it’s the first concert I have ever been to, where the whole crowd sat comfortably and within visual site of the performer’s facial expressions. While the lighting wasn’t the greatest for pictures, everything else was perfect.
Dustin was preceeded by the incredibly talented Yellow Red Sparks. Josh Hanson’s solo acoustic project that reminded me a bit of Damien Rice meets Death Cab For Cutie. I would strongly suggest you take the chance to see him if you can and purchase one of his $1 cds.

When Dustin stepped on stage to perform with friend Chris Jones (if my memory serves me well) on drums and brother Chase Kensrue on bass, I have to admit, I was surprised at his look. He looked much more like a family man, and much less like a rockstar than past concerts.
His set wasn’t the longest, but still contained almost all of Please Come Home. Covers that ranged from Springstein to the crowd favorite Counting Crows, “Round Here”- Kensrue opened a new channel of his ability during this show. Comparing him to his aura performing in Thrice is almost impossible. The intensity, passion, and precision is definitely still there, but the flavor is different. Making use of the acoustic guitar and harmonica, instrumentally he replicated his new CD perfectly.

I think the reason that Dustin Kensrue has always been able to captivate audiences and impress critics the same is not because of his honest demeanor, authoritative stage presence, or tasteful banter, but because of his voice. Kensrue has the power and the harness of veteran acoustic artist like Rocky Votolato, but the range and power that can hang in there with the best. It won’t matter if it’s the first, fifth or fiftieth time seeing him perform, he never fails to please.

While opportunities are few and far between, I wouldn’t hesitate to catch one of his solo shows for an instant. Kensrue has truly proved him self as one of the most versatile musicians in music today. There’s a definite appeal to his solo act that some may ignore plainly because it’s not what they expect. Don’t miss out, catch the show, buy the album and support an incredible musician.

To Write Love On Anberlin

February 11, 2007 By Michael Schneider Leave a Comment

To Write Love On Her Arms will be accompanying Anberlin on their upcoming national tour. Jamie will be speaking every night before Anberlin plays! Please support this AMAZING movement any way you can and check out the shows below!

We are going on tour with Anberlin!

Hi Guys.

It’s late and I have to wake up in a couple hours to fly to Raleigh, but this can’t wait.

Anberlin has invited us to join them on their nationwide Spring Tour. Anberlin’s amazing new album “Cities” comes out on February 20, and the tour begins the next night in Charlotte. These shows are going to be so good as, along with Anberlin, it’s Bayside, Meg & Dia, and Jonezetta.

On that note, you need to know that “Cities” is ridiculously good. I kidnapped Deon’s iPod on our flight home from India, listened to the whole album, pausing only to tell him and Stephen “this is so good.”

David, Lauren, Trisha and I will be at every show. TWLOHA will have a table, complete with merch, info, ways to get involved, and a list of local resources each night. That’s something we’re excited about, being able to connect people to help in each city that we visit.

Last but not least, Anberlin has invited me to speak briefly before their set each night. It is hard to explain how much that means to me, that one of my favorite bands would trust me with their stage for an entire tour. I was driving around today, thinking about it, getting so excitedâ┚¬Ã‚¦ What would you say if you had five minutes? Five minutes to address difficult things, to try to get to that place where pain and hope collide, to tell people that they’re not alone…

Daphne Loves Derby Interview 1-26-07

January 29, 2007 By Michael Schneider Leave a Comment

Spencer Daphne Loves DerbyBig thanks to Mike Cubillos of Earshot Media for the chance to interview the band, and of course, thanks to Spencer!
My questions are in bold, Spencer responses are normal type.

Please introduce yourself.
My name’s Spencer and I play lead guitar in Daphne Loves Derby

Daphne Loves Derby owes quite a bit of it’s early success to the internet, you guys recorded 3 songs with Casey Bates in a studio as well as 10-15 on your own at home, which do you think was more productive?

I think it really depends on the producer you are working with. In our case, Casey had more of a role of a really talented engineer rather than digging into our stuff and nit-picking it out. I think we are the type of band, we just wrote tons of songs at home. We probably demo-ed on garageband over 30 songs. From that’s what seeded all the songs we like, we had time to write good songs rather than writing a mediocre song and make it great. I think it’s a healthy mix of both.

Do you feel like Casey allowed your first record to get to it’s fullest potential?

At the time, it did well. We were young and didn’t totally know what we were doing yet. None of us have anything against Casey, and we don’t want to trash but I think any band feels like that CD could’ve been better.

Your first couple videos made it onto MTV, MTV2, Fuse, and other TV outlets- how influential do you feel that TV is to artist success?

I think we haven’t seen much fruit of TV because the play we have gotten is very minimal. Videos on TV reach millions of people at once- and youtube is having a huge impact but I still think TV has a dominant impact as well and it’s not going to disappear any time soon. I don’t think we’ve been able to take advantage of what cable television can do, yet.

How are things going with the label, Outlook Records?

Things are going well. Trevor’s team lost the other week. (Trevor plays for the Denver Broncos and is the president of Outlook) We just signed for two CDs so after Goodnight, Witness Light is released we’re not on them any more. So far it’s been good, they definitely believe in us and they give us a lot of freedom with the CDs and the moves on the business side.

What was Tour for the Cure (Jack’s Mannequin, Copeland) like for you guys?

Tour for the Cure was fun, it was the biggest tour as far as attendance goes, that we’ve ever done. Walking into some of those venues, our jaws would drop and our eyes would widen. It was kind of like, ‘wow, we’re playing that tonight?’ It was exciting for us to play with bands that are so tight live, you just suck it in and try to absorb everything they are doing.

Still young guys, where are you at with school?

Since we started touring we haven’t had anytime to be doing school. When we were home we were there for a couple weeks or writing for a month. We all either went from High school to touring or did community college until touring.

You guys finished your new record, Goodnight Witness Light- done with Matt Squire (Panic! at the Disco, Cute Is What We Aim For), tell me about it.

Matt Squire was a blast, we definitely connected with him musically and personality wise which made it just awesome to work with him and bounce ideas back and forth. We walked in with lots of ideas and we were stoked to be isolated. Last time we did the whole record in Seattle and there were so many distractions. At Matt’s studio, his basement is where we were living and the really big garage is the studio. You’re in this recording zone, it really allows you to focus. We were able to write at night, and do pre-production during the day. He was super fun to work with. He didn’t change our songs into something we didn’t want them to be, but he would still be critical on anything he thought was lacking. We were really thankful to be with him.

What’s the best gift a fan could give to you guys on tour?

I never mind homemade cookies, chocolate chip is my favorite. Pretty standard. Somebody bought me a lot of things for my birthday once, like headbands and target gift cards and that was pretty fun.

Any last comments?
Seahawks lost and it breaks my heart!

Dustin Kensrue – Please Come Home

January 18, 2007 By Michael Schneider 3 Comments

Dustin Kensrue Please Come Home

Artist: Dustin Kensrue
Album: Please Come Home
Label: Equal Vision
Purchase: MerchNow
Release Date: January 23, 2007

Overall: 9.1
Music: 8.8
Lyrics: 9.5
Production: 9.0

Dustin Kensrue, mastermind and frontman of alternative rockers Thrice, has been embarking on many new endeavors recently. Between the birth of his first child, his position on the board of To Write Love On Her Arms, writing and recording a new record with Thrice, and playing countless solo shows, Dustin’s solo album may be subconsciously titled as a request of himself. Regardless, this eight song debut contains the passion and the power he exudes in Thrice, but in a stripped down, soft-serve setting.

Reminiscent of Johnny Cash meets Bruce Springstein mixed in with the expected honesty of Dustin’s writing, don’t think you’re getting an acoustic version of Thrice. This album is far removed from their sound. The country and blues tone is not normally something I take to, but for some reason, Dustin does it differently.

The songs are not groundbreaking, life changing, or perfect, but they’re easy to identify with, sing a long to, and love as though they were written for you. I strongly recommend this album, it just may be your gateway into a genre ignored by a lot of modern rock fans, and embraced by this modern rock icon.

Track Listing
1. I Knew You Before
2. Pistol
3. I Believe
4. Please Come Home
5. Blood & Wine
6. Consider The Ravens
7. Weary Saints
8. Blanket Of Ghosts
