Green Day’s US Tour Kicks Off With A Bang Over July 4th Weekend

CRITICS RAVE OVER EARLY SHOWS IN SEATTLE AND VANCOUVER

Burbank, CA- Reprise Records’ Green Day launched their North American tour with a bang over the holiday weekend with shows in Seattle on July 3rd and Vancouver on July 4th and the rave reviews are pouring in. Take a look at what critics are saying about the first two shows on the multi-platinum band’s first proper tour of the United States and Canada in more than three years.

Rolling Stone: “As if releasing a wave of energy that had been building up during their four-year hiatus from touring, Green Day poured all their heart and soul into a powerhouse two-hour set.”

SPIN: “The band’s relationship with its audience is disarmingly real, a cross-generational give-and-take that’s as punk as any Gilman Street scroungers today.”

Seattle Times: “There are few bands that can hold an audience from the front of the stage to the bleeders the way Green Day can.”

Seattle Weekly: “Green Day is clearly a band intent on giving people their money’s worth and thoroughly enjoying themselves in the process, which are ultimately the most important ingredients for a satisfying arena rock show.”

The Province: “Full points to the production values on this baby. Constant “˜statement’ visual montages played across the giant rear screen all night. A never-ending array of drum-triggered strobes and follow spots galore did exactly what good stage design should: It made everything epic.”

Vancouver Sun: “This reviewer’s throat felt like grated up mozzarella by the end of that final encore, it was worth every single holler. Every single yelp and whistle. Every ear-splitting minute of it. It was an awesome Independence Day show, f-bombs, fireworks, punk ‘tude, anthems and all.”

Green Day, which is singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tre Cool, are touring in support of their eighth studio album 21st Century Breakdown, which has recently been certified gold by the R.I.A.A. Produced by Butch Vig, 21st Century Breakdown was released by Reprise Records on May 15th, 2009, and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, as well as on the Rock, Active Rock, and Alternative charts. The album, which has already spawned the Alternative radio hit singles “Know Your Enemy” and “21 Guns,” also topped the charts in 24 countries including the UK, Canada, and Japan.

Green Day’s tour will cross North America through the summer, including a stop July 27th and 28th at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, before finishing up with a show at the Forum in Los Angeles on August 25th. Please visit http://www.greenday.com/ for more information.

LIGHTS Interview

July 6, 2009 By Kristen Cavanaugh 11 Comments

lights_small

I recently had the chance to chat on the phone with Canadian singer-songwriter, LIGHTS while she’s out on the road with Warped Tour 2009. She currently has a 6-song EP under her belt and over 12 million hits on her Myspace page. She’ll be releasing her full-length album in September, but until then, catch her on Warped Tour (until July 26th) and then a brief ten day tour with Keane. I think it’s safe to say we should be expecting great things from this girl!

Let’s get the stereotypical question out of the way. Who’s your favorite band to see or hangout with at Warped?
Well, there’s so many good bands on tour this run. There are different bands that I just want to see for different reasons. UnderOATH I’ve always been a big fan of and they’re one of the headliners on this tour and I love to watch them along with Less Than Jake who are like, the soundtrack to my summer for the past seven years. And also, one of the newer bands that I’ve been really enjoying are Breathe Carolina and the reasoning being is that my music essentially started itself on Myspace and so did theirs. We kinda started a Myspace at the same time and over the past years it’s just really, really worked out so we kinda encourage each other at a distance for the past year and now we finally get to be on this tour together and watch each other play all the time. I’m just so proud of them and  situations like that where there are different degrees of stokedness and enjoyment of different music but all-in-all, there’s so much talent on the tour.

You went from having your songs on commercials for Old Navy to playing the pits at Warped. How do you explain that? What was the transition?
Well, I wouldn’t necessarily consider it a transition. I just feel like it’s really important to keep your audience broad. Tackle different things even if you don’t think it will automatically be assumed that you fit there. Old Navy was definitely a fantastic way to show the world my music. I love the juxtaposition I get to have with all of these different associations. Warped Tour is just one branch of that. And I’m going out to tour with Keane soon which is just completely different and one of the other ways to keep everything diverse and keep your audience broad and show people that you’re not just one thing.

Your songs on myspace have hit what I last checked to be over 12 million plays. Is Warped the perfect chance to mingle with all these people that gave you the 12 million plays? Do you hope to turn them into fans who will buy your album?
Absolutely and that’s one of the things that’s I’ve spent my time doing on this tour. I do my set and then I go straight to my merch table and meet everybody and I’m mean sometimes I’m there, for example, in Dallas I was there for two and a half hours just meeting people. I mean, obviously these people are the reason I’m here and they’re the priority and it’s so cool meeting people and seeing you know, whether A.) they just heard of me for the first time and they’re going to become a fan or B.) if they’ve been listening for two years and it’s changed their life. And it’s the coolest thing ever to be on Warped Tour and to get the chance to see all these people and that’s what I enjoy most about it actually.

You consider yourself to be a very visual artist. Can you explain what that means?
Every time I do something musically, I always have a visual accompaniment in my mind when I write or when I come up with the melody. That being said, the lyrics are very relateable and very common. For example, I like the way that I talk. They’re not very Sci-fi-y lyrics, but rather the Sci-fi world that I’ve kinda created comes through in the production of my music ““ kind of quirky and lush sounds that take you to another world and that’s even more highly and obviously manifested in the videos and the artwork I’m doing and my website design and everything . Like, my videos are very sci-fi oriented and clearly about me going to different planets. Like, all these things collectively I’ve created sort of an alternate universe and this very visual world to go with my music. And rather than actually writing about sci-fi characters, it’s visual, it’s the hints, the fantastical elements of my music.

You have another album in the works for a fall release date. Can we continue to expect those same visual aspects?
The album will be out in September and ABSOLUTELY! There’s more of these cool sounds that I’ve been experimenting with just wrapping around my songs but still maintaining the concept that if you’ve got a good song at the core of it then you start wrapping it up in like, strings of stars or all these cool little creative things that really adds a lot of feeling and ambiance to the music. Plus, one of the things I’ve really come to embrace over the past couple of years is that I talk, really, really, really fast in real life and I wanted to embrace that in my lyrics and there’s a lot more lyrics in small spaces. I first discovered that in one of the songs in my EP ““ it’s called “Ice” and it in the bridge I talk really fast and that’s when I realized “whoa, I can sing as fast as I talk! I gotta do this more!” So there’s more of that on the record, too.

Once this new album drops, can we expect a really cool video like with some of the concepts you have going on in your mind?
Oh yeah, definitely. I’m actually a video the day after I get off Warped for the first single, “Saviour” which is track one on the record. It’s kind of a bummer that’s it’s the day I get off Warped, I’m going to look so beat, but it’s going to be really fun and the concepts are really cool.

Once all that happens, what’s next? Do you have a tour in the works?
Definitely, after Warped I’m doing a bunch of festivals everything, then I’m going out on the road with Keane in September for ten days I think and then probably an excessive tour on the record when it comes out.

If you had to play one of your songs to somebody who hasn’t heard of you before, what song would you choose to play to describe LIGHTS?
I would probably pick, at this point, I’ve never written anything that I that I don’t enjoy playing or thing isn’t a good representation of my music, however, at this point, I’d pick “Saviour” to play for somebody because it’s a little of everything I do in it. You know, cool sound, heartfelt lyrics, came from a sad place but turned it around into something hopeful and a lot of cool ambiance surrounding it and it’s going to be the next single so that’s what I would share with somebody, I think!

Why should fans come see you on Warped Tour?
Um, I think you should come check me out at because it’s a little different than what you may normally see at Warped Tour and you’ll get to see a keytar in action and it will cool you down because most of the Warped Tour dates are very hot and I sing cool things 50% of the time, haha.

Anything else to add?
I think that about covers it!

LIGHTS’ first single off of her new album hits radio today in Canada! Be sure to call and request “Saviour” if you live up there!

MxPx Celebrate 17 Year Anniversary

Exclusive Live Performance Broadcast Nationwide Thru Stickam.com and “Best Of” Set List Chosen by The Fans Through PickRset.com

Los Angeles, CA , July 6, 2009 ““ Today marks the 17 year anniversary to the day that the rock juggernaut that is MxPx performed their very first show in the backyard of Mike Herrera’s childhood home in Bremerton , WA . In that very suburban spot, they created a recording studio out of the free-standing garage, and The Clubhouse was born. It has become a memorable and historic location for the band, which is why they have chosen, on this anniversary, to bring it back home, literally, and perform a “best of” set list live for their fans!

MxPx has teamed up with Stickam.com to bring their fans to one online location on Wednesday, July 8, for a full band performance. The performance will be a true fan experience with the band performing and doing an open Q&A throughout their set for all fans to take part in. Fans can log onto www.stickam.com/mxpx, starting Wednesday, July 8 at 5:30 pm PST/8:30 pm EST, with the live set kicking off at 6 pm PST/9 pm EST. Always wanting to have fans involved, in conjunction with the live performance, the band has teamed up with pickRset.com starting Monday, July 6, fans can log onto www.pickrset.com/bands/mxpx as well as MxPx’s official website and social networking sites (listed below) to vote, actually hand-picking the bands “best of” set list for the Wednesday show. Fans will have up until the morning of the performance to choose their favorite MxPx songs for the performance.

With bands sprouting up left and right, longevity is an attribute found in few and far between within today’s society. With that in mind, on thoughts of whether the band believed they would be together this long, front man Mike Herrera says, “I never thought about it too much, although, sometimes it feels like an endurance test… how long will we last?” According to the faithful, MxPx has more than passed the test. And what news fans probably don’t realize, drummer Yuri Ruley responds simply as “I’ve spent over half my life in MxPx. Let that blow your mind a little!”

Over the years many memorable performances and moments come to mind, but Mike recalls the 2000 Warped Tour as one, where the band played right through a huge rainstorm with a hardly a single fan leaving to seek shelter during the set. Guitarist Tom Wisniewski cherishes the opportunity MxPx had to open for Joe Strummer in 1999 at the Fillmore in San Francisco , “We didn’t play any better than normal, but getting to share the stage with a legend was
truly an honor.” Yuri recalls their first show in Brazil as a favorite. “It was insane. I was so taken aback by how good it was that I kinda had what I can only describe as an “out of body” experience. I was sort of floating above myself, playing, yet also observing.”

Cherishing 17 years together, returning to The Clubhouse for this anniversary show is, as the band states, a huge honor in itself, even though it’s Mike’s house to begin with. This was where the band’s early works, specifically Renaissance EP and Panic, were developed and recorded. The band is also paying homage to the fans and the
city they love, Bremerton , WA , where they do in fact have a key to the city, a huge accomplishment and honor
for anyone.

As to the future, the band has some definite thoughts on what, and where, they would like to go. Mike thinks playing a concert in Africa would be wild, and Tom wants, “to play a USO show in Iraq (or wherever they wanna send us) for the troops. It’d be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Besides, who doesn’t wanna ride in a Blackhawk Helicopter?” Always open to new opportunities, the band recently visited China for the first time and Israel for the first time last year. Whatever lies ahead the band is ready ““ a new cover album, On The Cover II, is out now through Tooth & Nail Records, in the studio working on a new EP, readying the release of a Christmas album later this year and more yet to be unveiled. As the momentum continues and as the band continues to create, tour and impact music fans worldwide, why change the formula? MxPx are in it for the long haul!

The Used To Release Brand-New Studio Album ‘Artwork’ on September 1, 2009

FIRST SINGLE “BLOOD ON MY HANDS” HITS RADIO ON JULY 14th

Burbank, CA– Orem, Utah’s The Used, who have been tantalizing fans by previewing new songs during the Bamboozle and Bamboozle Left Festivals and during recent headlining dates, are proud to announce the release of their fourth studio album, entitled Artwork, on September 1, 2009. Starting July 21st a deluxe pre-order package of the release will be available only at www.theused.net.

Produced by Matt Squire, Artwork is a raw collection of eleven songs that not so delicately teeter the line between being aggressively discordant and charmingly hooky. The first single, “Blood On My Hands” premiered June 30th; it sold over five thousand copies in the first day and shot to #9 on the iTunes Alternative Chart. The track, which guitarist Quinn Allman describes as the song that “sums up everything about The Used” hits radio July 14th.

“Blood On My Hands” is confined chaos, brutally thrashing one moment and proffering a pop-driven, sing-along chorus the next. “Empty With You,” a track frontman Bert McCracken says is “about feeling empty and lonely but as long as you have someone who can feel lonely with you then everything’s okay,” surges with passion and gripping honesty, while “Kissing You Goodbye” balances the album’s predilection for propulsive rage with its quieter, piano-driven exploration of what it means to have someone to lean on.

“This record is more sincere,” Allman says. “It’s got a sound more reminiscent of the first record. Lyrically, it completely engulfs you and makes you feel safe but it’s all about feeling alone and empty and knowing there’s always a light. If you’re frustrated that much it means you care that much. The lyrics carry you through the record and you’re right with Bert and where he’s at. The music isn’t showing off. It’s just being what it is. I think the fans will appreciate all that.”

“This record is about coming together,” McCracken adds. “Whether it’s through positivity or negativity, it’s about coming together through anything.”

Artwork encapsulates the past eight years of this hard-touring band, which has made the rounds of Warped Tour, Ozzfest, Projekt Revolution, Give It a Name, Reading, Leeds, and Taste of Chaos. The Used have sold more than two million albums in the U.S. Their previous release, 2007’s Lies For the Liars, debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard Top 200.
