I think band websites have gotten progressively tasteless over the years. There's too much emphasis on bells and whistles and not enough on content. I hate the sites where I have to navigate through hundreds of annoying flash intros and moving layouts to see what I want to see. Frankly, myspace/purevolume pages work conveniently enough for me, and even then you don't need to make your myspace background a 1000 x 800 pixel monstrosity that takes an entire 2 seconds to load on cable bandwidth. It's about the music, remember that.

I think it benefits a band to have their own website, but not all bands need them. A MySpace page and PureVolume page are usually more then enough to spread their music. But when it comes to consistent branding for a bands album / website thats what makes it cool and useful to have their own website.
