I see the pros and cons of both cds and digital downloads. As someone who's personal cd collections tops over 500 LPs, EPs, and advances, I know where the argument for tangible mediums lie. However, I don't think the cd has the staying power of something like vinyl had to stick around. For all intents and purposes the cassette tape has been virtually absent for years because it didn't have an ulterior purpose besides being a carrying medium. The vinyl is largely still alive because DJs and skratchers still use them and need them.

Personally I'm all for the digital downloads route, sans the DRM. There are 3 main reasons why I feel this way:
1) It's convenient and instant. There's no comparing the ease and speed at which you can obtain virtually anything you want through some e-download site. There's no shipping time or gas spent.
2) It's cost efficient. There's no more extravagant shipping fees if I want to purchase international cds. It's a flat rate no matter where I live and most times downloads rival or are cheaper than their physical counterparts.
3) It caters easily to the digital EP sampler community. If you want put a single or two out and tease your audience until the full length it's the best way to earn the extra buck and create buzz.

And who says the mix (insert medium here) is dead? I still make mix cds to play in my car, but I personally release mp3 mixes to the online community because it's easy and ubiquitous. I believe the digital takeover is already half over. By the next generation cds will have phased themselves out and labels will have to become more aggressive in pursuing digital download avenues. Those still pandering the cd will die fast and quick like Towers.

i buy cds because they are tangible, i enjoy the artwork, and digital music doesn't seem that appealing to me. sure it may sound convenient but it just seems "cheap" to me.

It's funny, because everyone thought CDs were the ultimate storage medium, but it's recently been brought to light that they have just as much generation loss as other mediums. I haven't read your whole thing yet, but I will and reply.
